A “gummy” smile is when your smile shows a higher than average amount of your gum layer. Perhaps one of your teeth needs a crown or bridge, but there is too much gumline to support such a procedure. Or maybe you’d simply prefer to flash more of your pearly whites than your gums. Consider crown lengthening! Dr. Henry Espinosa and his team of experts in Albuquerque, New Mexico are trained to meet your needs. Here are a few FAQs:
What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a common surgical procedure invented to expose a greater amount of your teeth.
What do we do to prepare?
First, the The Office of Dr. Henry Espinosa will schedule one or two preparation visits. We will review your medical history and x-rays. You might receive a professional tooth cleaning or a temporary crown. After the teeth are prepared, we will set a date for surgery.
What is surgery like?
Dr. Henry Espinosa will first administer anesthesia. Then he will make small cuts in your gum tissue and remove some bone from around the roots of the teeth. Then the surgical area will be washed and your gums will be stitched together.
What will recovery look like?
Dr. Henry Espinosa will prescribe a pain reliever and mouth rinse. You will be given special oral hygiene and diet guidelines. You will want to put ice on your face as soon as possible to reduce swelling. After a week or so your stitches can be removed. Your gums will take about three months to heal, during which The Office of Dr. Henry Espinosa may schedule follow-up visits.
