The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which often develops from the presence of hardened tartar on your gum line. The bacteria in tartar can lead to the sensitive gum tissues becoming inflamed and cause symptoms such as persistent bad breath and gums that bleed too easily.

According to the American Dental Association, about 47 percent of American adults ages 30 or older have developed gum disease to some degree. The primary causes include inadequate or inconsistent daily oral hygiene and hardened tartar on your gum line. Additional risk factors include alcohol, regular tobacco use, and dry mouth and other medical conditions.

Often, a thorough dental cleaning from your dentist and team is enough to reverse gingivitis. During this procedure, we remove any trace of hardened tartar and work with you to improve your oral hygiene routine so that you can treat the condition and keep future gingivitis at bay.

If you don’t receive effective treatment and work toward gum disease prevention, gingivitis will grow worse and become periodontitis, the dangerous form of gum disease.
