When toxins and bacteria build up and damage the gums and teeth, this causes periodontal disease. The periodontal pocket must be cleaned out to remove the diseased tissue and prevent the condition from worsening. Dr. Henry Espinosa may perform a procedure known as curettage to treat gingivitis and early periodontitis.
Curettage removes the chronically inflamed tissue that builds a wall around the pocket. It is usually used in conjunction with scaling and root planing, or to disinfect the treatment area before osseous surgery is performed.
In the past, a manual tool would be used to remove any infected tissue. However, our practice strives to use the most minimally invasive procedures available. During the procedure, our periodontist uses LANAP® to remove the tissue and stimulate regeneration. Because LANAP does not need any cutting or sutures, it is much more conservative than traditional tools, which means your initial procedure and your healing process will be shortened. The procedure can usually be completed in one visit. You may also need three follow-up visits to monitory the recovery process.
