Do you have gum disease? If so, it’s very important to treat it as soon as possible. If you delay treatment, the disease can worsen, spread and destroy your entire smile. You don’t want that, do you? So, make sure to treat your gum disease immediately. Fortunately, there are many treatments available that can help with gum disease. Our dentist, Dr. Henry Espinosa is happy to tell you all about those treatments, which are:

-Dental cleanings: Dental cleanings are used to treat the early stage of gum disease, which is gingivitis. These treatments are successful because they remove the plaque and tartar from the teeth and gumline. Those dangerous substances are the culprit of the disease.

-Scaling and root planing: Scaling and root planing is used to treat the later stage of the disease, which is periodontitis. This involves your dentist deeply cleaning the teeth and root surfaces by scraping off the plaque and tartar. Then, he will smooth out the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to them and heal.

-Gum and bone grafting: Gum and bone grafts are necessary when the disease has damaged the oral tissues and underlying bone. Gum grafts involve covering the exposed tooth roots with excess gum tissue or with gum tissue from a donor. Bone grafts involve replacing bone when it has been lost by placing natural or synthetic bone in the area.
